Scanning electronic microscope visualization of C. thermocellum cells using cellobiose as carbon source. The cell surface of CipA-truncated mutants appears smooth in comparison with the wild type and suggests the loss of polycellulosome structures. No major changes are observed in the appearance or density of polycellulosomes on the cell surface of secondary scaffoldin mutants (Additional file 11). A scale bar is shown at the bottom right.
