Anaerobic batch fermentation on xylose. Fermentation of xylose by WR311 (a), WP111 (b), and WC111 (c) strains under anaerobic condition was carried out in SX medium containing 50 g/l xylose as the sole carbon source (see "Methods"). Amounts of fermentation products (ethanol, glycerol, and xylitol) are indicated on the right-hand Y-axis. The data points shown are averages of three independent experiments.
