Increase of alternative electron flux (delta rAEF) in dependence of the nitrate assimilation rate (rN). Delta rAEF corresponds to the difference in alternative electron flux with nitrate and ammonium as N source. See Table 2 for rAEF’s with the different N sources. Delta rAEF is plotted against the respective N assimilation rate (which corresponds to the increased electron demand for nitrate assimilation) under LLHC (low light high carbon), HLHC (high light high carbon), and HLLC (high light low carbon) conditions. The growth conditions are described in the legend of Fig. 2. Mean values and standard deviations were calculated for three different measurement days.
