  1. E. coli W ΔldhA ΔadhE Δpta ΔfrdA 445_Ediss was used for cultivation. Media containing the five amino acid mixture (AA) is compared to medium containing 0.88 g l−1 (onefold) or 1.76 g l−1 (twofold) asparagine (Asn) or aspartate (Asp) and the onefold vitamin concentration. The diol concentration from acetate is calculated by the subtraction of the concentration attributed to the amino acid(s). Mean values and standard deviations were calculated from biological triplicates
