Total dry mass recovered from the fermentation liquor after solubilization of milled un-pretreated CBI reference poplar biomass by C. thermocellum DSM1313 over 5 days at 60 °C. Dry mass recovered from uninoculated controls was included to account for any non-biological solubilization. Liquor dry mass was collected post-fermentation as described in Additional file 1: Fig. S1. Data are average from two technical replicates of each of two biological replicates (i.e., two fermentations) ± standard deviation (SD), n = 4. Statistical analysis was with one-way ANOVA followed by Fisher’s least significant difference method; *P < 0.05
