Representative mass balance of lignocellulose as defined by the process conditions used in Run 7. Lignin/sugars in the solid samples (stream 1 and 2) were quantified using the standard method [33]; lignin in NaOH phase (stream 5) was quantified gravimetrically by adjusting the pH of the solution to pH = 2–3 using 4 N HCl; lignin in stream 3 and 4 was calculated by subtraction; sugars in the liquid stream (3–5) were quantified using HPAEC.
