  1. Lignin content is expressed as percentage (wt/wt). S/G ratios were determined by summing the intensity of the syringyl peaks at 154, 167, 168, 182, 194, 208, and 210 and dividing by the sum of intensity of guaiacyl peaks 124, 137, 138, 150, 164, and 178 (see methods for details, Additional file 9). Mean ± SE, Significant P values are expressed as *P < 0.05, **P < 0.001 as calculated by statistical analysis using Statistica 5.0 with one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) followed by Tukey’s multiple comparison test. n = 25 for wild-type P. deltoides, n = 10 to 15 for vector control (v control-1 to v control-8) and PdGAUT12.1-KD lines (AB30.1-AB30.11).
