Effect of increasing furfural (a) or 5-HMF (b) concentrations on biomass production by C. bescii. Percent production determined as the average optical density (600 nm) of the experimental condition after 48 h of growth relative to the average optical density of the control condition (0 mM), which represents 100%. The standard error for the control conditions ranged from 4.1 to 5.1%. Asterisk designates conditions in which the presence of furfural (a) or 5-HMF (b) in the culture medium significantly (p < 0.05) inhibited growth as determined using a Student’s t test.
