Growth of L. starkeyi in the presence of inhibitory compounds present in PCS. L. starkeyi was inoculated to an optical density of 600 nm (OD600) of 0.01 in liquid MMGX medium with addition of furfural, hydroxymethylfurfural, or acetic acid. OD600 was measured after 3 days of growth in a shaking incubator at 30 °C and 200 rpm. No additional growth was observed from low OD600 flasks when reassessed at day 7. Red arrows indicate the concentration of each inhibitor in the MMPCS medium after enzymatic hydrolysis. Results are representative of three replicates
