  1. E. coli W ΔldhA ΔadhE Δpta ΔfrdA 445_Ediss was used for cultivation. Media contained 5 g l−1 acetate and the indicated percentage of 0.88 g l−1 aspartate. The ratio of aspartate to acetate is given in % of moles. Cultures were inoculated at OD600 = 0.5. Mean values and standard deviations were calculated from biological triplicates
