  1. E. coli W ΔldhA ΔadhE Δpta ΔfrdA 445_Ediss was used for cultivation. Yields are either calculated per acetate consumed (Ydiols/Ace) or per acetate and aspartate consumed (Ydiols/S, YX/S, YCO2/S, X = biomass, Ace = acetate, S = substrate (acetate + aspartate)). The medium contained the onefold aspartate (0.88 g l−1) and vitamin concentration. Mean values and standard deviations were calculated from biological duplicates. The theoretical yield is 0.5 Cmol diols per Cmol acetate
