Growth and glycogen content of Synechococcus sp. PCC 7002 in an externally illuminated bioreactor. The cells were grown in A+ medium with air bubbling. The starting light intensity was 100 μmol m−2 s−1 and was increased by 100 μmol m−2 s−1 every 8 h until a light intensity of 1000 μmol m−2 s−1 was reached. The optical density at 730 nm (OD730) of the culture (left y-axis) was measured every 12 h, and glycogen content (%, right y-axis) was measured every 24 h. n = 3 for all measurements
