FAQ – Biotechnology for Biofuels title change

From 1st January 2022 Biotechnology for Biofuels has changed title to Biotechnology for Biofuels and Bioproducts.

Why add Bioproducts to the title?

The Editors-and-Chief and Editorial Board of Biotechnology for Biofuels deliberated on the issue that the title of the journal had become too restrictive. When the journal launched in 2008, biofuels research, particularly ethanol production from lignocellulose was taking off. However, funding and research has diversified from biofuel production in recent years, to encompass higher value products from biomass, such as bio-based chemicals or materials. Whilst the scope and content of the journal have been able to evolve over time, we feel that the title itself may have lacked appeal to authors working in more diverse areas. Changing the title to Biotechnology for Biofuels and Bioproducts aligns the title to the growth in content we see in bioproducts (Fig 1).

The journal subtitle

The journal subtitle has also been updated slightly, to better harmonize with the new title, and emphasize the focus of the journal. The new sub-title is: Advancing biological systems for sustainable production of fuels, chemicals, and materials

When did the title change?

The title changed with the publication of the new annual volume (Vol 15) on 1st January 2022. All publications after that date will be published under the new title.  Authors who submitted during 2021 should be aware that if their article is not published until 2022, it will be published under the new title.

How will this affect the Impact Factor?

The visibility, dissemination and indexing of journal content will be largely unchanged. Nevertheless, a change in title will have implications for the Impact Factor over a three-year period. This is summarised in table 1, below:

There will be no listing under the new title in the 2021 Journal Citation Report, released in 2022. We cannot predict what the Impact Factor of the new title will be in the short term, however, the editorial policies and standards of the journal will remain unchanged. We therefore expect to retain our reputation for high quality research.
